If you buy the Harvest pack and sell it for 4k, you can buy pretty much everything in the nub pack and still have a lot of silver left over.

best $5 you'll ever spend, then wait till you get some walls and defense before spending on upgrades

Nah. I say buy a Harvest Pack and sell it for 4-5k, that's more economical

Yeah but then you have to store that 4-5k (can put in bank, but why not just wait until it's needed in the first place if so) and then spend it which requires knowing what you need in the first place, knowing what fair prices are, figuring out player stalls and/or player trading, not getting ripped off, and then not losing whatever you traded for (if it's not immediately usable).

Nice thing about the nub pack is it's all stuff that's immediately useful (well ok nails and writ of homesteading aren't useful until you start some sort of settlement) and doubles as a (short) list of things you'll need to get started.

But yeah I was alluding to something like that down the line if he only had $5 to spend and could endure roughing it without store help until he settled.

Like I said I still think its economically better investment. If you spend 5 dollars on newbie pack you get maybe 1k worth of things, maybe 1.5, and if you aren't settled I'm willing to bet 99% of newbies will KO from (insert stupid KO here). So then they lose it anyway

OP you will be fine. Not a lot of people play this game to fill up the world map, which is unfortunate. You will be lucky to even run into someone out in the wilderness. The map is literally huge.

Get stone walls and a gate up asap. Maybe a few cheap torch polls. Throw a lock on the gates leading in, and lock the door to your small house. And you will be fine starting out.

Long as you do not AFK for weeks on end, you more than likely will not get raided. Just my .02

I suppose you are writing this as you haven't happened to run into others, which doesn't make your statement true at all. I have come across quite a few people in the wilderness which includes both noobs and more advanced players.

Lol, your advice is conflicting anyway, you state the poster wont likely run into anyone and then next advise to get defenses up asap.

Spend enough time out and about I guarantee you will meet people. Some will be happy to talk to you, some will run away and some may even attack you.
I have played my character since around Christmas and have run into around 10 - 15 people outside of my base. Another 2 or 3 have come across my base whilst I have been there. I have no idea of course how many have found me while logged off.

All I can say is that it will depend on where you are first placed in the world, and then of course where you decide to move to. But you should be ready for anything.

I've played this game since 2012 and I've ran into under 20 people in the wilderness. Most of the towns I join I forage and hunt as a primary job. Player experience is going to differ on subjects like these.

Agreed, which is why I said it would depend on your location. Running into under 20 people in 4 years does seem odd to me though, when I compare it to my experience.

When people play Salem, they're not being their best. They're not being me. They're not being you. They're being a person with lots of problems and they're bringing their problems with us. They're doing drug, they're doing crimes, they're rapists, and some, I assume, are good people.

You should be fine. Just don't commit any crimes and you most likely won't lose anything. Back in 2012 when I was in the beta, I ran into two people who were raiders and then I fell off. Back in the summer of last year, when seatribe stomped my groups precious memories, I started playing Salem again. I have since run into two people. One of them was a nub who decided to build too close and refused to move (we smashed his leanto later) and the other was an alt sent to keep an eye on when we logged off so the justice seeker could claim my friends life for committing crimes and steal my wallet.
