Noobie Friendly?

Postby Ilkar » Wed Mar 23, 2016 4:12 pm

Hi All,

I have decided to take a look in to this game again i played for like 2 days some time ago. One thing that concerns me is how new player friendly is this game.. am i likely to spend a day or two gathering stuff only to be killed randomly and repeatedly by the first person i meet? I dont want a carebear game but i would like a chance to play unmolested by kids and greifers. Whats the learning curve like and is the community relatively friendly?

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong location and thanks for any responses.

In general, do your due diligence, and you won't be killed, lots of friendly people, but some will also kill you just for forgetting to close your gates when they are walking past.

Thank you for the reply. its nice to see there is an active community at least. I think i will give it another go. is it worth purchasing anything in the store to assist in the starting out phase? or is that best left for once you are firmly settled and have a firm base of operations with friends to back you up?

best $5 you'll ever spend, then wait till you get some walls and defense before spending on upgrades

There's a pretty steep penalty for murdering someone (in a nutshell, it exposes their own character to getting possibly murdered for a number of days afterwards) so it's unlikely (but not impossible) that someone encountering you randomly would permakill you because you would pretty clearly be a new player and there would be little to nothing to gain from it and no bragging rights either. They may KO you and steal a few things, but that's not the end of the world.

Getting things stolen from your settlement though is an entirely different story. IMO, just chill and wander and enjoy Salem for awhile and don't stress about hoarding valuable items or even building a base at first... Just work on your character and check out abandoned bases and look for a nice place to eventually settle.

Once you do want to start defending your things, this is a nice guide on fending off thieves and what you should focus on in the beginning as far as protecting your assets goes: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12582 It's pretty old (a bit over a year) but from a quick skim it still looks relevant.

Yes, definitely don't buy anything expensive from the store until you have a base. (nub pack is pretty useful though, yeah, but you can get by without it too so you might want to spend that $5 on something more advanced instead) Or if you do buy things, make sure to keep them in the postmaster (where you pick up store things and gifts from the devs) until you're sure you can keep them safe.

Last Will is pretty useful just for the peace of mind and not having to throw down Silver every few days just to update you character.

Sure, you might avoid anything dangerous with your "main", but even if you do, bad things happen. This just takes away the inconvenience of having to visit the undertaker to plan against that possibility.

You don't have to of course, it just costs increasing amounts of money and you have to do it at certain intervals to be "safe" with inheritance of your biles and such if you use silver.

Nah. I say buy a Harvest Pack and sell it for 4-5k, that's more economical

Yeah but then you have to store that 4-5k (can put in bank, but why not just wait until it's needed in the first place if so) and then spend it which requires knowing what you need in the first place, knowing what fair prices are, figuring out player stalls and/or player trading, not getting ripped off, and then not losing whatever you traded for (if it's not immediately usable).

Nice thing about the nub pack is it's all stuff that's immediately useful (well ok nails and writ of homesteading aren't useful until you start some sort of settlement) and doubles as a (short) list of things you'll need to get started.

But yeah I was alluding to something like that down the line if he only had $5 to spend and could endure roughing it without store help until he settled.

im assuming hes planning to use whatever hes getting, but yeah by all means if your after silver, there are plenty of people on here who will buy shop packs for way more than the silver you would get from actually buying silver, myself included :P just check the trade threads for a reputable buyer
