How exactly does purity work for smelting anyway? I put in all 37% Iron Ore and I got back a 10% bar and a bunch of Dross ranging from 13% to 18% purity.

I agree.

Updates are also chosen via the Southpark method. Jorb is a big fan of the show so they just get manatees to select "idea balls" with words on them from inside their tanks and whatever comes out they implement on Wednesday night. They do not start work on the update until Wednesday morning however so as not to over-think the creative genius of the manatees.

1x: 3% metal bar + 11% metal bar
1x: 11% metal bar + 11% metal bar
1x: 11% metal bar

Before the update, I always received 10% purity metal bars.

I haven't tried ( haven't found a copper mine) making copper bars either.

Now 2x 10% metal bar.

This time I practically only used lime cut from boulders (0% purity).
I'm thinking lime influences purity.

Point being that you can toss stuff in and just let it sit until it reaches its maximum potential without automatically losing it thereafter.

I've found this statement to be 100% false. Either the stuff inside the alchemy device disappears or the device itself disappears, if you leave things in too long. Aside from the 5-10 items I've lost inside the alchemy devices, I've also lost a pressure cooker and a test tube. The test tube is supposed to be a long process.. but if you leave things in for long, it disappears. Seems pretty broken to me. The Coagulative Alembic lowers purity pretty fast w/o lowering instability fast at all. It lowers purity at a lot faster rate than you can gain it with the other alchemy devices (as far as I can tell).. including the primary element, which is nearly impossible to raise using the other alchemy devices. Not sure why anyone would use it.

The retort is the only thing that seems to be working reasonably, as far as i can tell.

If you keep reading the posts after the announcement you'll see my pointing out that his wording was a bit off, and quite misleading. The risk of catastrophic failure only stops if the item inside the cooker or whatever was mentioned can no longer benefit from being inside the alchemy tool. Like an item already at 60/40/0/0 , 40 has nothing left to drain from to increase, so it won't budge from those values, nor will it (supposedly) risk exploding anymore.

I'm not sure how the statement I quoted could be misunderstood.

It can be misunderstood if you read just that and not the rest of the stuff said before it.

"Alchemy equipment no longer runs the risk of explosions or accidents if their process no longer has any material gain for the items in it. The alchemical modification effectively stops when the maximum benefit of the process has been reached."

Check the wiki, you need a mixture of ore & lime - and I expect its purity will affect the result.
