Fiber (from the French Fibre[1]) is a string or rope used as a component of composite materials, or matted[disambiguation needed] into sheets to make products such as paper or felt.

Fibre strikes me as a more archaic (and thus to be preferred) form. Verily.

It is older. Ending words with -er instead of -re started with Webster's dictionary in the USA fairly recently, which is why the British spelling is still mostly -re. o.o

general rule: if it sounds older/is harder to spell, it's probably the british version :lol:
That's generally how I keep British vs American spelling apart

Always wondered why the American dictionary changed this. Anti-Imperialistic ideas to separate us (Americans) from the rest of the English speaking world? Anyone have a good link? I've never ran across one. "Fairly recently," if I recall some of my American Lit correctly, was 19th century (latter half I believe). Seems like Mark Twain used the more modern spelling and he died in 1910.
