Not true. There are a lot of MMOs and "cash shop" games that sell both through Steam and on other sites, either their own or another 3rd party site. Steam does get a cut of any sales made through the service, but my understanding is that's usually balanced by greater sales volumes.

I've heard this previously for the Haven donations page as well, and I'm curious why. Don't you have credit cards where you're from, or what? What would be an alternative? Why does Steam work and not Paypal?
