It's not that easy or we would have one. When the server crashes, there is a bug in there somewhere. Sometimes the bug causes nasty things to happen to game data. If the server is just restarted without any maintenance, the entire world could be wiped out, and no one wants that.

Daily backups? hourly snapshots? redundancy?

We already have that. No roll back happened for more than 24 hours as I recall.
You thought I quit.

So you advocate that we rollback the server everytime it crashes wiping out an hour to a day.

No,

Not even this can prevent a crash if there are bugs in the system. Everyone has put their best efforts into achieving a bug free system, but there's only so much time in a day and only so many people you can hire before budgets are blown.

No,

What I'm really advocating is coding the teddy bear so it counts the time offline by when the character last logged out against the current time. But that's unlikely because you like my tears too much =P

That is pricely what the teddy bear does. However, "time" doesn't pass when the server is offline.

Set a timer ingame, log in on another character to check the timer. Done and done.

This was also somewhat of an issue to me until I found out Ender's timers count server time and not real life time. Problem solved, even if it tends to mess up schedules sometimes.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

It is somewhat amusing that the skill for tobacco calls its only use loathsome and despicable...
