Some things should be a challenge just to be a challenge. Even if there was no mats dropped from darkness creatures people would still live in the darkness and hunt them.

So if we get a bear the size of a townhouse in darkness that can perma kill and drops no loot, we are going to go out and kill it why? its the fel reaper all over again.

Players already can challenge themselves to do such stuff without any additional mechanics. For example you're free to pave 20 000 tiles with bricks for the sake of challenge.

living in darkness gives more "natural" protection in form of raiders having to avoid such animals and deal with the drain. since the animal cant go through your brick wall, you are protected against that animal

as for reward for actually killing it: it is enough that it is a vanity one, thats how they do in gw2 and it is highly successful

what devs should avoid is to make it so that once you reach 300+ biles, you are forced to rebuild a base in darkness or you will be at a far too massive disadvantage

why? because that would lead to a massive amount of area in the world being abandoned, which is a waste of resources

........

maybe an idea is to allow people to build the opposite of churches to create darkness where they live

To kill a bear the size of a house that can perma-kill you, thats why. Are you so addicted to the skinner box that you are opposed to anything that does not activate the electrode implanted in your brain?

one is not addicted to the skinnerbox.
the skinnerbox is an activity thats been proven to be effective, with EVERYONE!.
using it constantly is bad game design though .

High risk gives high rewards, low risk low rewards VERY SIMPLE STUFF. Our whole world is based around it, what your asking for is the designers to do is waste time creating creatures/content that barely anyone will go and try.

This is Salem btw the whole game is designed around high risk/high reward hence the permadeath aspect.

It shouldn't be advantageous to move to darkness when you reach high humors. That's just forcing you to replace your base after a while, thus making it pointless to push purity in your original base. That's not to say that darkness shouldn't have it's advantages, just that civilization should have some too for counterbalanace, so living in civilization is an equally viable choice even at high end humors. And the risk vs reward argument that's being used here is flawed. Any NPC dangers can be negated by bruteforcing gluttony. The danger from other players can never be neutralized, though. So if anything, civilization is more dangerous.
