What was wrong with meatsmokers, why one meatsmoker now requires highend skills and a week of the furnace work?

there are a lot of things that he made cost a crap ton...
and some like smoked meat don't make sense since they have been nerfed.

This might be true. Soil digging and archaelogy are next on our list so that entire system will be getting a rework I believe. We will know more in a few days when the next roadmap update is live.

I don't understand that either, makes no sense at all, the best a meatsmoker can do, among other things, is getting the rather new players up on the road of gluttony...
Even with the new inventory it won't get you up high all on its own.

Remember, they make mistakes, too, the carpenters bench needed wrought iron until someone raised a hand and said that it is wrong! Now it's simple nails again.
(pras to the devs for a lightning fast fix on that though)

Maybe someone needs to tell JC about those meatsmokers... :D

I can confirm that zero, 120 and 400 soil digging are indeed making a difference, though it is much less than it used to be.

What exactly is the issue with Meatsmokers now?

Meat was nerfed (twice), then purity for meat (for metal) was nerfed AND in the same time smokers become VERY expencive because of steel cost. But smoked goods weren't buffed back.

Ah, well that is intended. Smoked meats still represents one of the best was to gain quick low-level disposable alts. As such this building, the skill, and the mats are intended to very much be an end-game thing.

Thus smoker is offically a building for alt development. Hope this will be changed someday.

An alt could just as easily be your new friend that you decided to get into the game once you approached the end-game and can make it.

As such, Not subject to change anytime soon.
