When you gain /lose insanity it shows up in the system chat log with a value.
Add the insanity/madness meter as a toggle option.

Good things suggested many times by (me and) others:

- Studying any inspirational should reduce insanity.
- Drinking tea should reduce insanity. (Nice for bot users! ^^)
- Eating food to restore biles should reduce insanity

There actually should be 3-4 or maybe even more "main" ways of countering insanity, that could be tea, food for bile regeneration, studying, smoking, ... whereas you should be able to build up some "buffer", meaning if you had a good feast (and tea, smoke, ...) you should not be bothered by insanity for a while.
Or in other words, make it so that insanity can go "negative" (to the ammount of a few hours or so) if you do a lot of "sane" things.

Besides from that, I for myself once had a wish, that salem would be more like "don't starve", well, you all should be careful with your wishes!

Honestly, this is salem, not "don't starve", copying that stuff into salem does not really fit well, salem is about death through (mostly) other players or recklessness, or both, it just does not feel right.

(!) Hot info ahead(!)

(!) Coming in the next patch (!):
- getting KOed now has a chance to permadie, depending on your madness level, whereas zero madness still has a tiny chance to permadie
- playing a music instrument for others has a tiny chance of drastically increasing insanity, to the point where it is possible to instantly permadie through this, come join the "club 27"!!!

(!) Coming in the patch after that (!):
- aging debuff added!
- aging debuff increases with time played and can not be reduced or removed
- with increasing aging debuff, chances are that certain illnesses may occur, also new doctor profession
- new pharmaceutical products and regular visits to the doctor may slow down the debuff accumulation
- tobacco use increases the debuff accumulation
- every 10 minutes there is a dice rolled if you permadie of natural causes, aging debuff increases the chances

Tip: Mentioning it benefits bots or afk in any form is the best way to not get it.

Edit: And people need to get over that JC got inspired by Don't Starve; games takes inspiration from a thousand sources, it's nothing new, just like most platform games are derived from Mario, if not directly then indirectly. Just because JC liked a few concepts he felt fit Salem doesn't mean he copied that game in its entirety.

Gluttoning beyond 40 points should give 1 level of madness per 10 points

A way to counter insanity:

As it was written by some salemites, home-based activities should reduce insanity. For example, sitting in the chair next to the fire or reading a book. But reducing insanity while sitting encourages AFKing. This is why I would suggest that if you sit next to the fire, you gain some buff effect like "Rested and confident" - it stops insanity gain for a short time like 10-30 minutes but not more. This will let people go AFK for a short time without consequences or having to close and restart the game. But once this effect wears off, it should have some debuff (like "Lazy sloth") for 1-3 hours that would prevent "Rested" buff.

You could also make decorations useful by increasing "Rested and Confident" length for every decorative in the room.

A way to gain insanity and smth beyond:

Making raw meat and fish consumable. It should give a small amount of insanity.
Making brain also a food item (or drainable for brains). It should restore black bile well and give a good amount of insanity.
Seeing a hare transforming into a March hare should give a small amount of insanity. Wearing march hare mask...

Pipes:

Another way to use them on the mask gear slot for stylish look.

About Fertilizers.

It's a shame really that turkey poop cannot be used to reduce upkeep anymore. Before I would use it as first fertilizer so that I would never had to bother about the upkeep. Now it's not possible and only wood choppings can be used as upkeep reducer. I suppose we can't have a nice -5% upkeep to the turkey poop?

@ JC:

There is one tiny flaw in your copying of "don't starve" to salem:
Salem is a game that thrives through social interaction!
There is no drama and no tears without it!

Penalizing players for being logged in, or just sitting idle and chatting with others instead of doing something, is not beneficial, neither to the game, nor the community in any way!

I'm pretty okay with the update, but it could have been solved better or atleast let the dispute be put in the community's hands like it's always been.
