So likely random chance then, I guess that could explain my one super moldy one (which gave me only about 5 dry), but I wonder if the tile has something to do with it as well. I'm wary to experiment with that because I'd rather prefer not to spend the time to build a pile and wait 5 days just to get all moldy. Going to pave where I put my piles this next time and see how that turns out.

Some info I gathered from my timber piles
As you can see in the picture, every pile has at least 5tiles away from each other or the closest object. At the time I build those piles I had 25 H&N skills and there wasn't a wall next to them (even though 5 tiles away with a slop).
When I picked them, I had 55 H&N and you can see the order of built/picked order in the screenshot with the amount of molded ones. My first thought is that it gets a lower chance after you start massing them in a specific area, some kinda density maybe I dunno ?

In the end I got 118/120 from my first 3 piles and 25/120 from the next 3.

Wall is max 3 tiles from those lumber piles. When did you build it exactly? Were all piles built at the same time?
Upper right pile is 4.5 tiles away from the stump, not 5 tiles, and slightly below 5 tiles from the tree to the right. Would be easier to count if you didn't place the piles with ctrl.

the bottom row all have the same distance to the wall which is 4,5-5 yes but since 1 got 38 means it is not the wall that makes it a problem. They were build at the same time, in about 10 minutes. For the right side tree, yes you are right I didnt notice it. Now I cut it and place again in the same places, will report again after all is done

Maybe I have a problem with my eyes, but I see only 3 tiles between bottom row and the wall. Also, when was the wall built? Location of the pile and its surrounding matter not only at the time when the pile is built, but throughout those 5.5 days. So if you plopped piles, and 20 minutes later plopped wall near them then you can expect them to produce moldy boards. Was the wall built whole as we see it now, or in parts?

nah your right sorry 3,5-4 ^^ The wall was build 3 days after the piles were placed. But still 3 of the piles has the same distance to so one of them giving 38 and the rest 10 is funny. Also there is another thing that cought my attention, maybe the top right got mold from slump and it jumped to the bottom right and bottom mid. Maybe molding is a progressive thing, and the longer they stay there, the higher the piles get moldier.

I'm going to have to go with random chance or foot traffic, not the grass tile theory. We just harvested a pile that was placed directly on grassland, no dirt anywhere near it, and got 40/40.

There must be a random chance! I builded 5 piles like a 5 on dice. I did it 3 times and always got different results in the middle one. It was not only small random chance but it variet between 10 and 40 Dry boards. The distances between the 5 piles were exactly the same (8 tiles) and all were build on dirt and 20 tiles away of anything but the builded piles themselves. I destroyed every stomp, i even got all the area planed!

So i believe there is a hard random chance and i feel a little bit suked by the admins! This Information given in the game seems to be *****, or the code isn´t proper at all!

I'll be kind enough to confirm this. :)

So, putting a fireplace next to it could decrease the mold ?
