BTT:

I just shooed away a crow through a wall, so I guess it's kinda working, but their spawn rate seems still a little bit high.

Welcome to Salem, the sandbox, permadeath, shoo-crows-away game! ¦]

Feels like I'm spending half of my time while i'm online worrying about the upkeep on my primary fields which is really detracting from me enjoying the game. Do we have an ETA on a non pay walled scarecrow?

While a cool mechanic in theory, I don't feel like anything has been added to my time spent online, only taken away, now with added stress!

I guess JC was just too busy in the past and therefor long absent.
Now we get big waves of updates in short time!
And we all are really overwhelmed with all the stuff!

Crying about patches were at every patch. But now we get the whole crying at the same time.
It is normal.
We will learn to handle it.
And JC get now much work to balance it!

Not an easy time for both sides.

2.) How high can upkeep go?

2)600%

Thanks for all that info, though I dare to say 600% is much too much without anything better than wood choppings.

...inb4 people putting up alts near other peoples bases to harass them with crows. :D

Good news or bug, I dunno. Upon replanting, the 600% upkeep field goes back to 100% upkeep. So it still takes a tremendous amount of humus and 286 cotton seeds to plant, but the wood choppings amount will be just as a new field would be.

There may very well be an issue with putting fields back to correct upkeep. I'm going to investigate it, I had assumed it would work as intended because it is quite frankly the same exact implementation as when a Witch does it. Then I realized the very real probability that perhaps no witch has learned to cast that spell yet or done so frequently enough, and thus it was never reported it to me.

While I'm 'open' to a non 'pay-wall' option to dealing with crows. I'm not 100% sold it HAS to exist either. Spawn rates may be too high. But I see nothing inherently wrong with players 'hearing" a crow and then becoming frustrated that they are now forced to divert their attention towards their fields to make sure one is not getting them. I see a problem only if it is correct that the frequency in which this happens is too high. However, I have no scarecrow and I have yet to have a crow successfully get my fields. So until it actually starts bothering me as a player there is a fair probability it won't get adjusted down.

Crows spawned everywhere, today, but never on a crop field. Just luck.
It's math that everytime i log in i find 3 crows outside my wall, but still no one inside. A friend of mine, same claim, said he found only a crow on a field and he probably was enough fast 'cuz the field haven't reported any damage.
Another bit of luck, for now.

I'm still confused, though, about the spawning rate. Are they supposed to be common like rabbits and crickets (even if are not in pack)?

They hated my field and haven't touched it, so i'm not that much worried, but i've not understood how common a crow should be to fit with the original dev plan.

And also...

i wanna eat it. So badly. Let's the hate be expressed with the theet! >8D

The issue I see if on a new expedition. 600% upkeep requires a cotton bag of seed, which may not be available at the start of an expedition. Fairly quickly, yes, but could be a major issue for a new server (without buying from the cash shop). New players on Prov can simply trade for some cotton cloth or a bag.

I thought it would be nice if they were indeed the spawn rate of crickets/rabbits. Which they are. Just as a nice bit of flavour. In fact they spawn less than rabbits do by quite a bit. Players also have a VERY generous amount of time to stop the crow, i.e. just because he is pecking your field and otherwise doing nonsense on it does not mean he has actually done any damage. Until you allow him to do this for an extended period of time will you then suffer the consequences.
