Are you saying it is best to mine out a massive area leaving a few hard tiles and then do them last? Instead of working at the face of the hard rock.

Keep in mind that very little if any mechanics are ever explained by the devs. Most of the assumptions/discussions here are eventually based on conjecture.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Absolutely, I merely wondered if Procne was having success using that system. I know that one of my drop downs occurred in quite cramped conditions and another in open (ish) section of my mine. My suggestion of a formula should in no way be viewed as what I think the code is exactly like, I was just demonstrating a possible straight forward way in which drop down chance "could" be calculated. I would assume that most people won't experience that many drop downs, if we are to hypothesise on the underlying mechanics we will need a lot of information from different players.

While this is not entirely accurate, I can clarify that there are some hidden variables that very well could resemble the activity on a floor before the mine down becomes reasonably available.

To clarify further. Every cave down starts at something worse than a 1 in 30,000 Hard Rock to find. The more certain things happen, the better those odds get. The farther down levels you go. The worse 'starting' position you are at for the purpose of calculating those odds.

Just like fields... The system HIGHLY rewards the person who goes "Slow and Steady" in terms of time spent vs. reward. I.E. a player who only spend 1 hour a day mining in his mine will go down to level 9 for FAR less TOTAL hours spent then the players who are strip mining. However, like most systems in Salem you can 'brute force' it just as you can brute force the speed of a field. Meaning the strip miner will still find that he is reaching level 9 considerably faster (but for more total hours) than a casual miner.

I have, thus, decreased the speed further and I believe after this final adjustment mine purity is finally at a place that I think will be good for expeditions.

how is mine purity connected with expeditions ? :? will someone with low purity have some disadvantage ?

All purity is connected with expeditions because you'll all be starting at 0. We're trying to balance it so that in a new expedition server, all the purity grinds will advance at about the same rate.

while I very much enjoy the hidden stuff in the game and the fact you cannot play salem by finding everything in the wiki, I also think that there should be some way of finding clues about these secrets.

I remember an older post about brazzier purity, before this was displayed, and not only that. I still do not know the way for example to make butterflies out of caterpillars and sure a lot of other hidden stuff.

Now before some wiseass replies " you are stupid, go find out yourself", I 'm just pointing out the fact that I would love to see a hell of a lot more secrets and hidden aspects in the game and i also believe finding some kind of clues ( like maby how you find scents ) would make another interesting add to the game.

for example, JC mentions some "hidden variables that very well could resemble the activity on a floor before the mine down becomes reasonably available" how about when you come across one of these variables by accident you, get a hint telling you " It came across your perception that now you did -that- you have better chances for -this- to happen.

There could even be a personal character "log" that records what each of your chars has "understand" about the world surrounding him . :)

just a proposal, thanx for your sympathy

Could you at least tell us if mining out normal tiles on the same level can actually decrease the chances of getting a cavedown when mining a hard tile? Should I avoid digging anything but exploratory tunnels in search of hard rock?

Hard dedication and bit of luck is what you need for success in Salem gentlemen.
