End game Railroads and an a handcar run by up to two people able to carry a large load from a lime deposit or fast travel between places.

Make them very expensive and not able to take slopes too well requiring extreme amounts of resources and manual labour.

Everyone likes trains.

I think the setting is at least a century too early for rails, but I do approve of the sentiment.

Even if it requires a large investment in infrastructure, the ability to haul things quickly from one place to another would be very valuable.

Rails and wagons were used in mines in 17th century: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagonway

I think it's a sweet idea. Not real trains, but pullable/pushable wagons. They would be slightly faster than sleds and hold more items / objects, but would require rails.
The biggest problem I think would be protecting the rails outside settlement. If they are too easy to destroy then it won't make much sense to build them.

Nice one... we got in Salem some nice hills what if Dev would add gravity? :) If you push cart from hill it should ride without human help for some time :D

When i think about it a little bit more this kind of idea should belong in a "fast idea thread" that is couple lines long
so loftar and jorb can skim through it quickly and say no lol.

(or.. hey i like trains ¦] )

Edit: This is a hardcore game, things are supposed to be hard. Defending a railway would be another challenge.

If Devs would add new auth objects 25x4 tiles with low upkeep rate (maybe it should allow to tresspass and larceny without scents, but waste would leave scent) then defending railway would be possible... but question is why would anyone build railway between two towns :?: Without some profit that comes from having it nobody would want to waste tons of iron for that.

I believe someone posted an idea about mine carts already. I recall finding a similar article dating the practice back to the middle ages.

So we can have both. Rails on both outer and mine layers with handcarts and/or mine carts. Love this idea.

i like that idea ^^

i noticed claims can be a 5xn square meters long... so defending a railroad is a bit hard but if it worth...
only 1 thing... a well defended railroad will go from a your place to another making your home easy to notice, and making truble for wanderers who can't pass trough your claim :x
