I was thinking maybe it should be allowed to access a logged out characters inventory from their homestead (with larceny).

and if they don't have one, like most don't?

I've been thinking that too, but it is so, so harsh.
I mean... where does it end? Can you loot the equipment as well?
Alt vaults are ugly, though. I need not be convinced of that.

alt vaults generally do not have homesteads

The same would apply to main charaters and then you would drown in the sea of complaints about how people logged into game with completely empty inventory, having lost all the silver and equipment.
Also, if character's inventory and equipment cannot be protected while it's offline then why should character itself be? Let's allow murdering any character while it's offline from its homestead, without scents.

very true.
Only way to get rid of alt vaults is to have some sort of system to store things in safely and discourage multiple characters. With how the game is that is almost impossible with the unlimited character spaces you can store forever.
Could put a cap on characters and add in a bank type building for villages with large storage space. Have multiple locked doors like a deposite box that needs destroyed to access a space. People might also use the iron box more.

I agree we need to get rid of alt vaults, but looting offline non-criminals is not the solution methinks. Like Darwoth says, why would an alt-vault have a homestead?
I'd rather use this:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2399And I think Dallane's suggestion of a super-secure bank vault type building (that can only be used to store items, not homesteads) is a really nice one as well, for larger (but slightly less secure) storage. I can imagine I would even rent space in such a vault from a village/person I trusted enough

Well, I was thinking that anything, that devs think should be not alt-vaultable, should not be an actual item that you can keep in inventory, but a liftable object instead.
For example gold bars - after taking them from a smelter they wouldn't go to your inventory, but you would lift them, just like you are lifting burnt urns from a kiln. Then you can only drop it on the ground, or put in special container, similar to how you put and take objects out of sled.
This way the most precious items wouldn't be alt-vaultable, BUT also they wouldn't be that easy to steal - you can't just port to Boston with them, have to carry them back with you.
The only problem with utilising those objects for crafting. There might be some crafting station, where you place this object, just like with log on a sawbuck, and either use it with right click, or like an anvil. But it would feel weird :/

Alt vaults are less of an issue now than they will be. Honestly there's not much of value in game right now other than silver, but if we ever do get stuff that's truly difficult to make and can be stolen, then we have hotcakes issue.
I think the solution I presented in my Pride suggestion might be helpful. When we do create stuff of true value, it should be liftable not inventoriable. Can't vault it then.

If you don't have a homestead, your inventory's contents should drop to ground when you log out
