The writing is on the wall

Postby Chrumps » Fri Sep 30, 2016 11:05 am

Since thousands years humanity has sought to inscribe it's mark on the surrounding environment. The various marks, signs and writings were carved or written by people in every place they visited. Quite often the most important message they wanted to communicate was simply: "I was here!".

It would be a nice thing to have ingame a possibility to write on various things which were not originally meant to be written on.

1. Stalls
- possibility to write simple message, including owner name, hearth secret or Trade Wind forum link
- the text is visible in the stall interface only (both owner and non-owner versions)
- it is required to hold a knife to write
- erasing message takes 5 wood choppings and animal glue
- writing or erasing the message on someone else's stall is a crime of vandalism
- action implemented as a button in the stall interface

2. Buildings
- possibility to write simple message, any kind of advertising or harassing,
- the text is visible on the building wall, though only few first letters of it, it can be written in parts on all walls), fixed letter size
- it is required to hold a kind of brush (willow switch maybe)
- writing consumes a bucket of lime milk (it would be even nicer to have it coloured with berries)
- erasing consumes 3 buckets of lime milk
- action implemented as a menu option
- writing or erasing the message on a claim without permission is a crime of vandalism

3a. Walls (makeshift and splitrail), though I am not sure if these are worth it
- possibility to write a message on each wall section (or cornerposts only)
- the text is displayed after selecting "Read message" menu option, similar to a signpost,
- it is required to hold a a knife
- erasing message takes 5 wood choppings and animal glue
- action implemented as a menu option
- writing or erasing the message on a claim without permission is a crime of vandalism

3b. Walls (from stone fence upwards)
- possibility to write one letter per wall section, any kind of advertising or harassing,
- the text is visible on the wall with big letters
- it is required to hold a kind of brush
- writing consumes a bucket of lime milk per section
- erasing consumes 3 buckets of lime milk per section
- action implemented as a menu option
- writing or erasing the message on a claim without permission is a crime of vandalism

4. Trees
- possibility to write simple message,
- the text is displayed after selecting "Read message" menu option, similar to a signpost,
- it is required to hold a knife to write
- it is not possible to erase, though the tree can be chopped down, the vandalized tree is supposed to be angry
- writing on a tree is a crime of vandalism, it will also allows witches to curse the author.
- action implemented as a menu option
- letters fade over time

5. Boulders
- possibility to write simple message,
- the text is displayed after selecting "Read message" menu option, similar to a signpost,
- it is required to hold a an axe to write
- it is not possible to erase, though the boulder can be chipped away
- no negative consequences, except for writing on a claim without permissions, a boulder can be written on off claim and then dropped on a claim
- action implemented as a menu option
- chipping the boulder causes some letters to fade

All kind of writing should be allowed only after acquiring literacy.
It would be a nice thing to have multiple paint colours achievable by using berries, charcoal, or ground leaves.
It would be even nicer to have an invisible paint made from e.g. onions and visible only under certain conditions (e.g. drugs) - a kind of secret marks.

Would be fun but I think the problem would be showing this on the objects.
