Minor tutorial, UI and control system fixes

Postby Demek » Sat Dec 26, 2015 2:47 am

Hello,
I tried to play Salem on and off since 2013, but could never really get into it (I consider spending a couple hundred hours "trying"). Majority of the grievances are related to the UI and the control system that frustrated me to no end, and still frustrates me occasionally with Ender's client. There should be some in-game information about community software at account-registration/character creation since it's almost unusable otherwise.
Making this thread mainly with first login newbie retention in mind first though, partially as a point in case.

1)Character creation.

The first problem is the lack of tooltips regarding basic interaction and camera movement (press this and that in that order etc).
The very first thing a new player has to do is to adjust the camera in order to:
- click the woman gender option
- see his/her face at the barber,
- find the mirror (I created first couple characters without ever noticing it)
Since the controls are counter-intuitive (at least they were for me), it takes a while of frustrating clicking/dragging around to finally find the working ones.
The second problem is clunky movement, bumping into everything and getting stuck on invisible hitboxes, it's annoying.
I'm clicking more just to move around than to pvp/raid in a traditional mmo before even finishing creating my character.

2)Tutorial zone.

It's a big improvement over the previous "naked in the wilds" approach, still there are a couple more things that are problematic for newbs that you could include with proper interaction tooltips:
- lighting the big campfire with the tinderdrills, and cooking food over it
- charring milkweed roots and washing them for fibre
- getting diseased with f.x maroon fever and curing it with the leech, explaining insanity mechanic
- tutorial characters are not saved (I imagine because of the churn rate), but any disconnect will most likely be the last login of that player, storing it temporarily for f.x a day would help with it
- a minor annoyance of mine was that there is little to no grass spawning inside the tutorial zone for quick berries-on-a-stick and grass whistles

3)Proper UI & movement

- I would like to be able to bind my own keys
- I would like like to have more window and map options - fixed inventory width f.x
- I would like to have auto-interact/auto-pick up button (ofc not fighting) instead of point and click everything while getting stuck around random things, or
- I would like to have auto-walk key (numlock), f.x when trying to click on things while getting stuck bumping into random things with my camera obscured by terrains/trees
- I would really appreciate some semi-transparency of objects obscuring my character from camera view, especially when fighting

- I would like some fluidity of movement so I'm not stuck on every invisible hitbox edge, q/e for turning around would be nice too
- I would like to be able to decide/select what crafting materials to use for mass production beforehand - avoiding using up coffin planks, wrong meat etc
- minor annoyance - I would like to add branches/logs to campfire/fireplace with mousewheel f.x holding right-mouse button and scrolling after throwing in the first one

I would eventually like the steep learning curve and grind not to involve basic movement and management hell.
Thank you for keeping the game alive so far.

These are all fair suggestions. We plan on trying to go over the noobie experience again and polish it, but since we don't have any immediately plans to spend $$ marketing or make huge hype pushes in the next 3-6 months we don't feel a sense of urgency regarding it.
