Coal Mines

The forests are becoming barren as pioneers chop trees in order to fuel their finery forges and braziers. The environmentally conscious pioneer would move to the more environmentally friendly, clean burning coal! In essence, it would take more work to obtain, as it would need to be mined just like any other ore, but it would burn longer and hotter (or in Salem terms, be worth more fuel points), just like coal vs. charcoal in real life. This is obviously not a big idea, it's just something to add a bit more realism as well as another type of mine, or potentially just a new ore that can be found in existing mines. Charcoal would still have a purpose as it can be made in bulk quantities with much less work, but coal mined this way would take less physical time to obtain as well as burning for longer and providing more fuel for braziers and finery forges. It could potentially also be ground with limestone or salt using a grindstone to make black sand for glass production.

This makes the system terrible.

Just an idea man, I know glass is supposed to be top tier expensive stuff, so I figured that would be shot down. I just threw it in there because that's one of coals actual uses.

The idea seems neat but I think any way to create glass easier might not be the best idea, for now anyways.
Also I don't believe coal was largely mined until around the 18th century, and if I'm not mistaken the new world pilgrimage was around the 17th century so there's a small bit of conflict.
I'm sure mining will eventually be expanded to include different types of mines though.

I actually just did a little research since you piqued my interest. You are correct in a way, as the large scale commercial mining of coal didn't start until the early 1800's during the industrial revolution, and the late 1800's when it spread to the new world. However, small scale mining of coal from surface deposits dates back to the Romans. The commercial mining of coal in the new world began in 1730 in Virginia, but it wasn't a large operation, as coal had limited uses at the time. So I guess it is a little iffy to add a coal mine to the game, but it doesn't seem too far fetched in my opinion. I do appreciate you bringing that up though, this was an interesting topic to read into, I didn't even think about the historical accuracy of coal usage in this time period.
