Sounds like it would be more trouble than its worth. You would be constantly putting rubble in there instead of afk shifting.
The trade off being that its a lot faster, for people that enjoy active work, rather than afk work.

Some changes though, instead of 5 pieces, how about a stamp-mill style inventory, 25-50 rubble at a time, fill it up and use it like a grind stone.
The downside (because JC wont let us have nice things) would be that you'd have less of a chance to get gems or something.
