Keys should be made of metal. If one iron seems too steep for one key there could be a craftable "key blank" of which four are created from one bar of iron. I had lock smithing and had a locked gate days before I had iron which seems strange to me.

Maybe because they needed temporary solution before blacksmithing is fully implemented.
