How about throwing trashes away by rightclick them into the bonfire, etc?
That way, it will add more time to the fire.

but yea things go poof pretty fast no reason to burn them, the only reason I could see for this is you're too lazy to get more fuel for your fire and have an old shirt you don't like nearby...but fires have limitted times anyway and that shouldn't change
