I didn't wade through 17 pages, so it may have been said already. But I think its worthing bringing up again if that's the case.
New player gets sick in town, doesn't figure it out and somehow manages to max it and KO before learning how to fix it? (Had this happen recently with a new player, I managed to help him before he died)
I realize there's no excuse to not figuring it out or being unlucky enough that no one helps you, and making a new character is a easy solution in the begining.
But maybe disease is disabled on new characters until they either,
- leaves providence claim for the first time.
OR
- uses wilderness guide for the first time.
- character is older then X amount of time.
I think this would at least let a new character get a grip of their surroundings before the game punishes them before they even leave town.
tl:dr
Let a new player make the choice to commit to the permadeath by venturing out of town.
