I thought I'd put my two cents here since I'm a new player and your seasoned players can't understand how it is to be new at this point. Wrought iron takes too much coal and is too time consuming. You need wrought iron for a ton of stuff. You've turned it into a mini game that is not worth taking time on. It takes approximately 100 coal by yourself to make three wrought iron, if you are playing with another person it would take much less time and coal. With one person you can only make one batch of three iron blooms which turn into wrought iron, if you don't use the trip hammer fast enough they are wasted, if you don't keep pumping the finery forge the coal is wasted and you must start over. This mechanic is not necessary and in my opinion needs to be changed.

Try it with an alt or join/create a town

Then you're basically making every person join a town

i made a bunch of wrought iron pretty successfully on my own, with only one additional alt which kept the forge hot while I was tripping the blooms. As tripping one piece of wrought iron takes as long as one third of the total smelt time, it's not possible to do it more effective in group than I did (maybe marginally because you only need to pay attention to a single screen). It's far more efficient for everyone to have their own finery forge.
I find it a good thing that we are moving towards tools which are less and less disposable. You always have the free option for tools if you have some patience, but sped up tools take effort to create. So much so, that it is a much bigger step for veterans to hand out tools to everyone and their mothers, which is what happened previously and basically meant there was no-one lacking a tool.

I don't have an alt and don't anticipate making one. Having an alt is just a way to cheat through the game

unless of course the game creator is wanting everyone to have an alt, which wouldn't make sense to me but its not my game

Alts aren't really the intent, but rather for people to find advantage in working together either in a town or through trade.

with respect to that it still seems unnecessary as a mini game

If you find the finery forge not something you enjoy working alone. Make a friend. If you are finding that you are playing a MMO without the intention of making friends. Then trade for it. If you find that you don't want to do the mechanic, don't want to have any friends, and don't want to trade for the goods you don't want to make. Find another game.

seems constructive criticism isn't very good around here
