Mile Markers

Let me say I endorse (and enjoy) there not being any official Salem map. However, I still do find myself getting disoriented from time to time while foraging outside of Boston.

Yes, obviously I do know there are ways to avoid getting lost, but I do believe that reducing travel grind ever so slightly would benefit the game. So the goal of my suggestion is to preserve the complexity of current travel while helping players, especially new players, orient themselves within the game.

This could be accomplished in one of two ways. The first being that the devs could place mile markers at particular points within the area which the wilderness guide drops players. I'd suggest at places where trails cross rivers or other trails. A mile marker would simply be an arrow that points the direction to Providence and the "Miles" to Providence.

The second solution would be to have mile markers as a build-able structure.

Mile markers were fairly important navigational features in colonial New England. See this link for historical precedent.

That's a fascinating idea. I'd be curious to know what folks more intelligent than me have to say about this. I'd like to see it experimented with.

Mile markers should be player built only. They should work as signs but be large hard to destroy stone objects.

In general I agree. However I would probably point mine the wrong direction.

They have to point to Boston automatically or else this would be a mess. Also, how to prevent troll rocks in front of your gates?

It could be a mess thats up to the players, they should not do anything automatically. Also how do you prevent trolls from building anything in front of your gates?

I see little to no use for this.

Markers like this would be useful to a community, but there is no way to maintain a local community in Salem.
Having neighbours is plainly a negative thing and there is little to no reason to keep them around. As such having markers like this is mostly pointless and will only serve to draw unwanted attention to your location. Which in turn means most people, if they build them at all, will not be pointing them towards anything accurately.

Perhaps something to introduce when there's actually some meaningful incentive to have neighbours and/or communities beyond your own town.

As you can't build anything directly next to anything else any more no one can block your gate with it. I think it would be a nice thing to build for fun, but should require a mid range skill so that newbs don't spam them. They should also be automatic, otherwise they aren't going to have any use.

I was already thinking a navigation skill would be fun, it would allow us to "take bearings/marks" so we can remember exact spots, its not so useful now as there is no purity in nature.

a pointer to boston similar to the one to your homestead would be great
