High carbon will do that. Can be honed to quite an edge, but not a lot of durability in it.

That's just quenching. Tempering involves allowing the piece to cool and then putting a partial polish on it. The "polish" exposes unoxidized metal and allows you to see the temper. From there, you heat the metal and "run the colors." As the steel heats up, it will actually start to change color depending on where it is in it's temper. a light yellowish color indicates that the steel is brittle, but may hold a good edge. Yellow is good for some knives used in delicate tasks. Next, the steel will darken to a more bronzish color, which is good for tougher blades used in things such as hunting knives. personally, I'd want a sword to be in that bronzish range. The next step up is a purplish color. At that point, the steel is starting to soften, but it is becoming less brittle. Axes and pickaxes are best tempered to purple, but being a bit on the bronze side near the cutting edge/striking point. Lastly, the steel will turn a dark blue. This blue indicates that the steel is now very durable, chipping will be rare, but the metal will be somewhat soft. It won't hold an edge for very long so bladed implements should not be tempered this long. Blue is used in things like hammers, but hammers should have slightly harder striking faces. Harder striking faces is usually attained by heating from the center of the head and allowing the heat to radiate outwards through the steel. Any further than blue and the steel turns black. At that point, you have to quench the steel to normalize it and try again. Tempering can be redone many times. Never leave your knives on a hot stove or in a camp fire folks, you might screw the temper on it. Once the temper is where you want it, you allow the steel to slowly cool. The man that showed me how it worked would bury his pieces to be cooled in sawdust or warm sand. Now a days most just use a weird microwave thing to do the temper.

I think a spear for use against animals would be a good idea.

By that logic you could argue that C&D is more for maneuvers and attack types and offering ideas for things like crafted weapons should fall on the Master Artisan.... Wonder where he is...

Lets be serious here anyone is able to offer suggestions to the dev team. I am simply saying that if you want to have a weapon improvement for the purpose of hunting I personally would not like to see it as a sloppy job of just improving a sword. A hunting spear could use thrust as well and be used to improve items. Or something more than just hey let me fold some more steel on my saber and now I can thrust at animals better. I think the community has a little bit more creativity than that.

Wrong. The processed they used was already known and used by Europe. It is no way exclusive to nippon.

Never said that it wasn't known in Europe, I said it was invented by the Japanese who certainly didn't get it from the Europeans (as they already used that method before their close relationship with Europeans). But at the same time the Europeans didn't get it from the Japanese either sooooooo. Yeah I guess I can see how my phrasing is bad, sorry.

How about you report it instead of derailing yourself.
