Why not make crucifixes and study one or two and boom you are safe for about 3 hours...

I Think many of you who talk about how easy is to avoid gaining madness - have not tried to stay online for 10+ hours in a row.

You will just start gaining those levels no matter what.

Perhaps a huge boost for sanity in participating in weekly events?

Group activities are good in real life too?

Thoughts?

there is no difference between 5 2-hour sessions and 1 10 hour session. Just study something every once in a while and you're perfectly safe. Most activities give you random junk curios you can use (bat wings/geodes/brains/...) for a quick and easy boost to your sanity.

I have yet to gain a madness level due to over-time insanity: only two times I went slightly mad (once for blood moon, once studying blood shards before I was aware those raise your insanity).
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Well said Kandarim.
I was online for 7 hours straight on Tuesday this week and never gained a level....

Again per JC's statements a pilgrim that studies something at least every 8 minutes will not gain a madness level unless doing things that make you go mad. That being said if you know you did something that makes you mad like killing a squirrel or a turkey just go whittle a couple things and you are good.

BTW the 8 minutes has been tested it is something a little less than that in reality if the pilgrim is standing still the entire time that was tested over a 16 hour period and only one madness level was gained. However whittling something every 3 minutes for a 24 hour period prevented any madness level from occurring. That is just from my testing both cases the pilgrim had a undetermined amount of insanity to begin with and the pilgrim stood still the entire time only performing those tasks.

the problem isn't that it is not avoidable....

yes you can study stuff or smoke and such things and almost never gain a madness level.... the main problem is that it is a chore... it is taking away from doing productive things with your play time.
as a smaller inconvenience.. if you are studying things to combat your insanity then you are pretty much wasting inspiration points.

sorry for the very late replies.... everyone i played salem with quit... and all my villages have been raided.

You must be kidding me... I played last night for 5 hours straight. Chopped down about 30 trees. quarried 300 lime. Mined 504 Iron ore Smelted all of it as 14 ore X 6 smelters 6 times. Harvested 504 yellow-stained cotton. Built 6 chests and a Cementation furnace. Made 30 jelly. butchered enough fish for 15 drying racks full of isinglass. Made 8 timber piles. Replanted all cotton fields. Ground about 150 fish bones into bone meal. Broke into the level 4 of my mine. Planted 32 gardening pots with trees and 10 pots with shrubs. Killed about 10 deer and caught 14 turkeys. And made some tea.

Only once or twice did I think hey may be it is time I study a random wood chopping or meat scrap just to make sure my insanity goes down. I don't see a max of 2k inspiration out of the 2.5 mill I max out on as being disruptive to my inspiration.

It is not a chore. In the course of chopping down the 30 trees I got 3 crosses which reduce insanity I didn't study a single thing. While making the jellies my insanity was reduced didnt study a thing. Those are chores and they reduce insanity. So if you just go an mine real fast to then smelt it and do insanity reducing chores while you wait on that you will never gain a madness level.

The fact that you say "yes you can study stuff or smoke and such things...." tells me you don't really know how it works since one addresses insanity and the other madness.

yes, i was referring to both.

and having to do a task that reduces insanity is a chore.... if i mine/smelt and then feel like digging.... i should be able to go dig with out having to study/sharpen sticks first... or every time i find a lost colony... witch is what im having to do right now because im trying to rebuild since my village is one of the villages darwoth wrecked.

and the fact that there is no meter or any thing to SHOW that you gained insanity "once studying blood shards before I was aware those raise your insanity" makes it that much more of a chore... because you have to memorize what adds and what subtract insanity... but you have no idea how much.

and if any one figures out the values the devas said they will change the values to intentionally ***** with the data players gathered....
