there is no difference between 5 2-hour sessions and 1 10 hour session. Just study something every once in a while and you're perfectly safe. Most activities give you random junk curios you can use (bat wings/geodes/brains/...) for a quick and easy boost to your sanity.
I have yet to gain a madness level due to over-time insanity: only two times I went slightly mad (once for blood moon, once studying blood shards before I was aware those raise your insanity).

as a smaller inconvenience.. if you are studying things to combat your insanity then you are pretty much wasting inspiration points.
