I used a survey to get my alt over to my mains base. Then my main joined a village and used a survey to get there.

So I tried giving my alt a survey over to the new village and the NPC refused to take me, saying I already used a survey...

On that same note, what if the new village didn't work out and I wanted to go back to my old base, I have no way to get there, even by walking because I have no idea which direction it was in.

You can use the survey only once.
New Surveys that you made after them can help you to locate the direction of your place and how far away it is.

For finding your old base you should use external Map-Tool (for example: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=9617) and walk one time from Providence to your base.
The Homestead Arrow will help you to find it.
Then take the Map-Tiles (only available with custom client) and put them in your external Maptool.
Repeat it with every place you will find again in future.
Merge all tiles that you have explored.
Then you will have a nice Map after some weeks or month.

Thanks Kralith. I think the feature should be part of the game not a third-party software program that you can use.

Having said that I tried the program you have linked but it's duplicating certain maps, I think I may have to delete all my maps and start over. . I dunno

Think you should.
If you have a good start then it works fine.

Just Start with a fixpoint like Providence.
Take this Mapcontainer an put the tiles in the "5" Folder.
Make a own Folder in that you copy the Mapcontainer for merging.
Use then one Mapcontainer that is neighbouring of the already merged tiles.
Try it to merge.
If it works, take the next.
If it don't work look to other Container if there are tiles that already there in your map.
If merge still not work, search a tile that matched an rename it with right coordinates an copy it in the Containaer that is named "5".
If you then have some experience with that tool, you can put more container in the mapsession folder.
I do a backup of all my Container so that i can use the Option "Delete after merge".
Mapcontainer with inhouse or miningtiles just ignore, they are not useful.
