While I haven't personally tested the insanity mechanic on a newbie yet. I'm about to when the new server starts. Others have though, and they claim that it is quite difficult to become mad as a newbie with so much studying to do. I tend to think they are correct and newbies really don't have a big problem with madness. I've seen some veterans here complaining about what they Think will happen to newbies, but not much from actual newbies having problems.

I, as a trader, had many newbie customers, and the vast majority of them had at least 1 or 2 madness levels, and problems to get back to zero, also, a steep learning curve is not a bad thing, but some, both newbies and returning players, were caught off guard by it. One did not even know about madness until I told him and he had lvl 6, ok, that might be a little extreme and rare, just saying this happens, too.
Also, I had one customer buying a pickaxe, just to sell him another one the next day because he lost the first one to madness, which quite a harsh setback for a new player, and that can even happen at madness one.

I for myself never gained a lvl of madness myself, but I take care to make a studying-break about once an hour, and usually do only sane things in the meantime anyways.

Also, when JC gifted me some firsthand experience with madness, I found it quite hard to get back to zero madness, I took 3 of the best tobacco and the hookas while still staying at madness 1, only the teddy did the trick here.

I don't know what to really think of the madness mechanic, for older players who know about it, it is probably not an issue, for the newer players though, it might be a questionable experience to "wake up" (meaning, realizing there is madness) and find out they have a serious problem.
Those who manage to deal with it though, are probably worthy of continuing to play this game! :D

Just my opinion. I returned to game after long break and managed to get lvl 3 madness wandering too deep into darkness and spawning LumberLord there. I KOed, returned to my base and spent almost two weeks trying to get it down. Spent money on bear skin and made teddy, mined tons of stones to get Affluence set and finally i managed to get it to zero just yesterday. Problem with madness - you can get it by mistake and getting rid of it is really hard. Maybe not that big deal on Prov, but on Poph there is no tobacco sellers and hard to get bear skins.

Even one level of madness turns you basic work into hassle.

...or your shiny pickaxe into ...well... you know... :D

There should be some ingame info, and if its the chief whatsoever telling you in the tutorial about it, he then could say something about a place where wisdom is stored, with a small hint at the forums...
And/or there could be a small, madness free time for newbies, like a week or at least a few days, because when everything is new, you are likely to overwhelmed with exitement to get mad.

Yea, 3 days or so madness free would be a good thing actually.

And then, after 3 day or so, or maybe 24h of being logged in, you get a popup that, among other things, contains the words: madness, permadeath, and a clickable link to the forum announcement section.
(And the popup can not be closed for 1 minute, with a timer ticking down to indicate that.)

That way they would finally get people to read the forums.

Allows fractures to heal more quickly when sleeping.
Allows Disease level goes down when sleeping (doesn't cure).
Allows slow regeneration of biles when sleeping 4 hours or more.
Small chance for to go down 2 madness levels instead of 1 when sleeping with Teddybear.
Allows insanity to drop after 6 hours of sleeping instead of 8.
Allows madness to drop after 6 hours of sleeping with Teddybear instead of 8.

====Other Ideas===

*Shark Tooth and Beaver Teeth in inventory should turn into silver when sleeping 8 hours, small chance to turn into Fairy Wand.

*Chance of spawning Bedbug Inspiration/Any Bug Food in inventory when sleeping 8 hours.

*Sleeping in a Bed with high levels of madness, say 7,8, or 9 should have a chance to wake your character up from nightmares, interrupting the 8 hours needed to reduce insanity/madness.

the CHANCE of dropping a higher level insanity should depend on the bed also :)

I think the use of tobacco will rise again once we make it possible to kill anyone sleeping in a bed.

Wow kill people sleeping in a bed? that's dumb, if your so hard pressed to have people use the tobacco mechanic reduce the requirements you need to farm it then people will

What the really need to do is make it so that everyone persists in the world even if they log out.

This. Logging out should never make your character leave the world, you should be visible either standing or laying where you logged out.

Among this, blow darts should go over walls to, that way i can poison you from outside your claim while your laying and sleeping outside.
