You are right. My english is not the best, so i was influenced of wrong think about the right meaning.
I have think the word puppies are the tiny version of a pet in meaning of sweet and breeding.

And you always right, that the ladies in this time had lapdogs.
But i think the rich ladies was not under the first pilgrims.
They had no reason to go over the great sea and to begin a new, maybe better live.
They came later, when the pilgrims have civilized the rough land.
P.S. Now have i learned a new word. Lapdog. It reads funny, when i strictly translate the individual parts of word it calls like a dog that makes a round
