In game notifications for newbies...

Postby darnokpl » Mon Dec 24, 2012 12:22 am

Most newbie players doesn't even know about custom clients or other interesting things in Salem because they never read forums!
Imho game client should display huge window with text like
"If you got troubles with game, deers are killing you, you can't forage items, got interesting ideas, what to meet or trade with other people go and read forums link now!!!".

Some kind of notification about the existence of custom clients, the forum and of course Sevenless' guide would be great. From time to time I still run into new players, who're complaining about how hard foraging is, for instance, and it turns out they're all running the default client, when I ask them about it. And since the in-game tutorials only help to a certain extent, some links to forum guides will be helpful to a lot of people. If possible, it would be a good idea to add links to relevant sections of Sevenless' guide in the help articles.

People are looking into game, but they are not used to look into game environment like forums, irc etc etc.
I am sure that official page got many views and if there would be page named "guide" it would get 10xmore clicks than forum link.
Still imho Salem as new game on market needs some in-game links/guides/notices to help people reach forums, maybe somekind "quest" like with "leave boston"/"teleport to boston" would help?

Be that as it may, that's apparently how some people play games, but it would still be a good idea to let them know help is around. If we can keep at least some of these people playing by giving them a hand, I think it's worth a try.

It needs the devs to write a better default client and to provide a proper tutorial for all ingame actions, (for what it's worth the tutorials are very good imo).

You guys know they are going to keep working on the client and tutorials right?

I much rather have actual content then have to wait because people can't read the wiki and forum.

Trouble is that kind of attitude leads to it never getting done. And it would be a shame for people to avoid this game because of a poor interface.

More or less this. It creates additional inaccessibility that keeps out players that would otherwise have enjoyed the game. However, legally Salem will never endorse a 3rd party mod or client so there will never be an official document directing players to it.
