Item visibility on the mini-map

Postby martini » Wed Dec 26, 2012 7:43 pm

When foraging for items, it becomes apparent that berries, grass, fruit and such shows up on the mini-map. Wouldn't it be better if the items only showed up in the player window, and not on the mini-map? Behaviour as of now draws player attention from the main window to the mini-map, and this deprives the player of an important part of the game experience. It would perhaps be a lot more fun and adventurous if the mini-map only displayed (semi)static terrain in a way similar to a normal map.

Brilliant game you guys have made!

Do you mean completely removing the minimap radar? No, they just added it and it's not going back to the old system.

At least for all small items, that is, plants, mushrooms and such. At present I'm almost exclusively looking at the mini-map. 98% of finding things takes place in a tiny square in the bottom left corner. I can't play the game like this. It feels, well, not good.

Just a question to the mods: Was my reply moderated in this thread?

Do you have any suggestions to make it better? Minimap radar is not being removed unless there is a better foraging system.

Hmm, let me see what I can come up with..
What have been the major challenges so far? What is the reasoning behind adding the radar?

Radar is an intense benefit for finding the smaller objects in foraging. Modded clients have it, and you can't stop them from having it. Most players also like it as a feature. So it's finally been added to the vanilla client to close the gap for those using vanilla compared to those using modded clients.

Modded clients aren't going away anytime soon. If ever.
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

Almost everything is hard to see without the minimap icons. I developed such massive tension headache the first few days of playing before I switched to Enders Client.
Like Martini said, I also look at the minimap almost exclusively when exploring/gathering material. Feels backwards on some level but it's the only way to avoid snakes and see the valuables.
