The Client will run without attempting any updates.

How do?
Paste this code into a text file with Notepad, save it, and then rename the file ending from ".txt" to ".bat".
Place this .bat file in "[UserName]/Salem/bin/" and then double-click to run it.

(I got this code from tweaking the run.bat file which came with Chiprels LowGFX pack.)

+1 awesome

Why the ***** does the developers insist on having their crappy client so that we have to rely on third party work to be able to play?!

And yeah, +1 for the solution. I'm still pissed off though.

Edit:
-5 because this file can't be run on Mac. I apparently don't have a program that can handle the .bat file
Edit 2:
The performance is also piss poor on PC resulting in a OutOfMemory error before I could even collect hides and port to server city to sell them.
This is going to be a horrible day. I can feel it.

if you insist on playing a mac (where you will almost always get horrific performance for games like this), then you should know to use a shell script instead of a batch file.

On linux you do it like this (i'm assuming mac is similar)

create a file "salemnoupdate.sh"
The first line of the file should be
Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh

And after that you paste whatever command you want to run from the terminal
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

it is not... Notice the difference between https and http ?
Granted, the difference is small, but it is not the same link at all.

Anyways, you're safer for now to just run the client without the updater, instead of relying on non-proven, non-trusted links (however good everyone's intentions are)

I find it worrying that you assume I have performance issues on Mac only. The problems I have are not restricted to Mac and for that reason I am not going to buy a (new) ****** PC just to play a game. Lag comes on both my machines. Porting (includes using houses) crashes the game on both machines and I get a ton of Not Responding on PC only.
So yes, I am going to insist on using Mac because on the grand scheme of things I find it to be far better than a PC.

As a sidenote, my irritation is not aimed at you personally. I detest the default client. I detest when people place user friendliness secondhand to everything else. And I detest PCs with passion. I have one because I needed it for previous studies. If I could afford to play frisbee with it I would.

Thank you thank you thank you for putting it in idiot proof language... I can now play again.

Ender,

I'll take this down once things get straight on your end. I know there's all kinds of ethical issues here.

How does this work?

Unable to launch the application: illegal URL redirect

Postby Toorimakun » Wed Apr 10, 2013 12:04 pm

this has been happening a lot since the last patch... spamming the start game thing seems to work eventually but kinda annoying.
i am using the ender client but some one else said they were using the normal client and the error code almost is the exact same:

java.lang.SecurityException: illegal URL redirect
at com.sun.deploy.net.HttpUtils.followRedirects(Unknown Source)
at com.sun.deploy.net.BasicHttpRequest.doRequest(Unknown Source)

*update*
ok with the default client it starts but when i try and login it gives me an other error:
"Connection refused: connect"
RIP: Purity, you will be missed.
