Unable to open game

I was recommended this game from a guild member from another game...
I installed Java as it was recommended and when I execute the salem.jnlp file, it flashes open a command window and then immediately closes. This is as far as the client seems to go. Any recommendations on how to fix this so the game is playable?

I had a similiar issue once, fixed it by entering control panel/program files/Java...Then checking security settings, mine is set on high atm, but also double check make sure you have Enable java content in browser checked. When that happened to me something was blocking execution. If you have Comodo firewall...well, that one has causes many of my programs to fail, deleted it off my computer like a bad virus.

First thing to check, security settings in Java.

Comodo has a relatively easy work around if that's the issue. (It's posted around here somewhere... adding the "-nosplash" option to the command line I believe is all it was.)

A couple other antivirus programs have caused issues as well. In one case, it was simply disabling the AV/firewall until Java had downloaded and assembled the runtime package. In another case, it required complete removal of the AV because of the companie's virus definitions and review policies.

That link seems to offer 500,000 different versions of Java 6 to download.

You're looking for the most recent JavaSE Runtime Environment (not JDK, which is the developer package). The most recent one I see in the archive is J6u43. If you see update 45, that would be preferred as it should have a few more security/bug fixes.
