Cannot launch official client after turning on shadows

Hello, I am using the official client. After clicking on the option to turn on shadows, the game crashed.
Problem is: I cannot even start up and log in to uncheck the option. Log in, before I could click on the uncheck box, crash.

I have tried all other common solutions, after searching around the forums. I think what will solve the problem in this case is for me to access a configuration file so that I can switch off that option without starting up the game. I have tried deleting, reinstalling java (trying alternatively 6 & 7) and Salem for the past 3 hours, hunting down all the files I think which could be used but to no avail.

In short: is there a configuration file for the vanilla client which I can access, outside of the game?

Do not use the vanilla client.

99.99% of problems solved.

Use Enders / BD, fix the problem, if you feel you must use the base client, then revert to using it after you fix the problem.

Try updating your graphic card drivers also.

I'm having the same problem as the OP. after turning shadows on it started crashing not only the game but the whole system -_-
