Black screen at startup/Can't see any objects/characters

When I first open the game, I briefly see the login screen and have to randomly click in order to get it to log me in. It worked fine the first time I launched it so luckily I told it to remember me.

After I get into the game, I can see the terrain and the UI just fine, but I can only see text bubbles from what I guess are NPCs. I can move around, but there are no character models.

Have you cleared your java cache and reinstalled Salem? From what I've seen here, that helps with this issue occasionally. You could also try uninstalling Java 7, rebooting your PC, and installing Java 6 - while the client supports Java 7, it seems to be much more stable and issue-free on Java 6.

Make sure triple buffering on your GPU is turned off. Also, change your gaming graphic settings to default/standard in the Catalyst Control Center.
