server restart messed up tanning

Postby generalcutie » Thu Nov 22, 2012 4:33 pm

the server restart seems to have messed up my tanning hides, for some reason only one completed and the other 3 were incomplete, I thought that by adding an additional brain, the other three would complete (thinking okay they are all 99% this should work), instead only one leather instantly completed,

before any one asks, yes I had my hides to the tub before the brain solution.

Rather, this was the way the mechanic was intended; the previous behavior was just a bug. That doesn't mean, however, that we won't be looking at potential things to balance out the change, like adjusting the amount of tanning fluid one hide needs or perhaps adding more sources of tanning fluid.

technically brain tanning is typically inappropriate for leather anyways, brain tanning is typically used for making fur as it typically produces a softer piece of fur.

Really? That's quite interesting. Do you have a source for further reading?

Because that would make you require iron before you can even make leather

Actually, brain tanning was quite common for buck skin in this time period, though they did use other things to tan as well. Check out this article about the history of tanning:
http://www.braintan.com/articles/history/history.html

From the article:
...North America (brains, smoke, liver, sweet corn, eggs, pine nuts, yucca root and a whole lot of other things!)

If you're looking for more sources for tanning fluids, how about our newly acquired corn or eggs from the turkey coops?

Of course, the general rule of thumb for brain tanning is "Every creature has just enough brains to save its hide... one way or another."

Truthfully, you guys had it right in H&H, most heavier duty tanning is done with oak bark and other sources of tannin... as for a balanced way to add it to Salem's current implementation, how about oak + myrtle leaves and acorns? ¦]
