I don't know what the status of the server was when you last got that answer was. (The servers have been up and down over the last couple of day). Sometimes the servers are up and running fine but they're not taking log ins, so yeah, you're friends could well be on and playing, but nobody else is able to get logged in and join the game. As far as the other two... that won't make a bit of difference (I believe it has in a few rare occasions).
The issue could well be on your end. Have you checked your security software to make sure connections to the game servers are allowed? Is Java allowed to run network applications? Do you have TCP 1871/UDP 1870 open through your firewalls (make sure to check your router(s), too, as they can cause this)?
I understand it's irritating to not be able to log in to play a game, and it's easy to get upset, but troubleshooting a connection isn't a one-step process. When people suggest something and it doesn't work, you need to come back to the forum (or chat or other source of your assistance) and report what you observed. Only then can we suggest the next step. Getting upset and irritated only makes the process harder as it obscures judgement. The easiest, most obvious fix is usually given first, the most technical last as a good majority of the users will have difficulty resolving the suggestion.
