A friend of mine who recently started playing and got lots of madness level by accident is desperatly trying to get madness down. With no tedday bears and bear skin available and tobacco being far to expensive for a new player the last resort is smoking in the Hookah. On the first try it was abviously to long and she passed out. Since then shes trying for 3! days to smoke again but it allways say she has smoke recently allready. So whats wrong here? Thought there was a 24h timer.

Because the timer resets when you try and fail because 24 have not passed yet

If the madness level is really high buy tobacco, they work better on higher levels

If using a custom client go to Xtended -> Timer. And add a 24h timer in the client, because if the server crashes or comes down time won't pass in game, but your timer stops.

Wow i would not have guessed that with the timer but that explains.

Madness is allready at 7 because of moldy boards :\ Will see if we can get cheap tobacco somewhere.

why are you licking moldy boards?

Why do people lick boards? Because they have no idea about madness after being just a couple of days in the game. Not everyone is a forum and wiki warrior and the whole insanity /madness part is damn far from self explaining.

When i started playing some time ago i actually started over because of the boards. My Character was 10 minutes old when i found moldy boards in a basked in the wild. Was curous what will happen and poof Madness gone up. Thank god i googled the wiki right away and made a new char because i noticed pretty fast that madness would otherwise totally wreck my starting experience.

It doesn't take "a couple of days" to make dry and moldy boards, if you give moldy boards to a noob is your problem

Wow.. I havent given anyone moldy boards...let alone any boards at all.. Why do you impute that to me?

It takes 5 days for the boards to try and a few to get to that skill and obviously it happens that new players dont know anything about madness up to this point.

when they gain their first madness level they get the help window, so that should point out they're doing *something* wrong. From that point on we should be able to assume they know there is something like madness, which they can die from, even if they do not really know how to solve it.

Hmm are you sure about the help window? Because i can remember that i myself didnt get the help window before my madness was 3 while licking the boards. Maybe there is a time delay that is to long when you gain levels that fast?

Anyways i think a help window when you have reached 1 allready seems a bit late considering what psychotic episodes and such can cause. And especially when you take into account how difficult it is for a new player to get back to lvl 0.

As i mentioned allready i scrapped my first char right away when i learned what madness is and realized that i have level 3. Since then i never went above 2 with my current character keeping it allmost all the time at 0 and still lost lots of stuff and nerves to madness. So maybe we should educate newbies about madness before they run into this trap

Yeah, there can be a delay from when the server generates the madness level to the time the client gets notified.
