It's possible Java is flushing its cache at some point after you play, either because you aren't allowing Java to store temp files or there's not enough cache. This is one of the downsides of using Java Web Start to launch. Try the following:

1. Open the Java settings. (Control Panel>Java in Windows)

2. On the "General" tab, click the "Settings..." button.

3. Make sure the checkbox "Keep temporary files on my computer" is checked and you can set the amount of disk space used for storage in the "Disk space" section. Unless disk space is a premium, just set it to max (slider all the way to the right).

Salem only needs a couple hundred MB of storage, less if you're using a custom client (the custom clients store the resources elsewhere on the computer persistently).

if you are using a custom client: they should not redownload the files every time. I'm not entirely sure how the Java caches functions wrt. persistency, but the custom clients save the binaries to ~/Salem/bin and only redownload when they've been downloaded. In case this is an issue with one of the custom clients, please post in its respective thread. In case you're talking about the default, well - Magic explained it better than I could :)
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

the custom client should not need to redownload files because you use the default client in between, so that is still an issue.

That actually is both. I've never had the default client or the custom clients redownload if I switch back and forth between them.

also, it's not because the updater window appears that it's actually downloading. what it's doing is checking the binary files you have against the most recent ones.

edit: the updater itself will always be downloaded, but it's a very small file and should hardly be noticeable.

I just wanted to throw in that I have this issue with re-downloading the client on each start. I think it appeared about three months ago with a Java-update.

Since then it will take about 3 minutes to download and start every time, but I am not sure if I should roll back to some older Java version to fix it... (saving temporary data is enabled).

What about the others in this thread: how did you solve this issue? I am happy about any information about this.
