I think you were probably overweight, so the pickaxe dropped to he ground when you switched back to your pan.

hmmm... The easy fix is for me to stop letting toolbelts decrease weight so that players who have maximum weight when switching tools don't find they drop to the ground.

But I can only imagine the tears of doing so. So let me ponder on it a bit further.

shouldn't the weight of a held item be more or equal then in the toolbelt?
so it should have gone in the toolbelt...

this was my only pickaxe, and i don't have steel or silver to get an other one..
i can except losing an item to my own fault but this is a lack of foresight in development of the game.
and as you said in a round about way the answer isn't to make items in the toolbelt weight more their standard weight.

The tool you need comes out of the toolbelt, and THEN the tool you have goes in. While they are both out, you can go overweight because the tool that just came out of the belt is now heavier than it was. So, something drops on the ground and that's the first tool.

in games that i have helped out in closed beta i know they had an invisible inventory spot that only the system could access for this kind of thing.
and in my case i was changing to a sifting item so my pick would have dropped in the water... no way for me to pick it up.

It dropped both my axe and pickaxe when this happened to me.

well this is a game mechanic...

when i accidentally dropped my shovel on a cliff edge i borrowed a shovel and dug for hours to get my shovel back... i didn't come to the GMs
when i pressed ctrl + alt and dropped **** in the water i sucked it up and just dealt with it... i didn't complain to the GMs

again... if this was my fault i wouldn't be here.... but this is the games fault and i would really like my pick back... or the silver i paid for it.
in most games i have been in the devas would apologize give back the pick/silver and a little some thing extra... like a cheap cash shop item... but i just want my pick back.
