The hard drive may be going by the wayside, and it could be the only problem. When you have idle time, run a disk scan and make sure it does a surface scan. (Checks for areas of the drive that can't be used.)This may temporarily fix the problem, but it is only temporary. You'll need a new drive in a few months most likely. The drive might also be making odd noises and dumping error logs about bad read/write operations. Check hardware logs, etc. found in most all operating systems now.
Most likely, you only need to clean out the fan vent. Notebook cases are usually sealed up enough that you won't get much any dust inside, but if the fan vent starts plugging up, it'll overheat and cause these same issues. Just blow some canned dusting air in the exhaust port to push anything that might have been trapped out the other way. You shouldn't need to open the case.
