It's not really an issue of game mechanics balance, so the fix is obvious: don't drop the purse/silver.

Make it so purses have a graphic when dropped, so if by some bug they do get dropped, they can be recovered, not that you would be able to drop it by conventional means of left clicking over open space.

The thing on cursor dropping isn't the problem.

I've never let a snake bite me IRL because, well, I don't want to get poisoned. That's a nasty trip to the doctor and might even kill me.
