I don't know if these are actually related to the crashes, they seem to have been created at about the right time, or maybe even a minute before the crash. As the whole system is locking up though I don't see how they can be relevant error logs.

Can you use any other client? It looks like these are generated while you're using Ender's or the Latikai client. Try running the default client for a while and see if you crash. The primary reason is to see if you crash to desktop and get a Windows error report or something other than what you've posted.

If you haven't, you might try clearing your client(s) out of the Java cache and try downloading again. You might want to/need to delete the User/Salem directory and cache, too, to make sure any old client specific files get wiped out and aren't causing errors.

I'm afk until tuesday, but I will play with the default client until I crash. It doesn't crash to desktop either, I get the same freeze with that. At the start of this world I did a complete wipe of all versions of all clients in the hope that this world I wouldn't have the problem, but I do. I don't imagine this is something new, it has always happened, on all clients. I'm just only getting around to starting my own thread. Actually I did try asking about it before, I think someone told me it was a connectivity problem, but that just doesn't make sense to me. Sometimes I get lag, sometimes I don't, the crash doesn't happen at particularly laggy times, and using http://www.pingplotter.com/features.html I can see that when the freeze happens my ping and packet loss is fine, unless of course it has, in the 5 seconds since the last ping, suddenly gone awful, but then that doesn't make sense either, because I have lost internet connection plenty of times while playing and all that happens is I find I've been logged out.

Tell me, where should I look for error reports to debug this? The whole system is freezing, there is no time to produce a report, only something that is constantly outputting its what it is doing would show this.

First, I shall say sorry, I missed your comment about "every client." I missed the forest for the trees.

As far as finding error reports, there are several places to look, but they may or may not be helpful. Without seeing the data on your computer, I can't really say where to start.
- Check in event viewer. I'm not familiar with the setup of it after Win XP, though. Mostly, you'll be looking for errors about device or software failures. Often, when Windows hard freezes, nothing additional gets generated, though sometimes something is logged just before the freeze.
- Check in the root directory. Windows saves crash logs there if memory severs correctly.
- I'm probably missing one or two good sources to check.

Are you having any other issues with your system or software or is it strictly Salem? If Salem is crashing no matter which client you use, then the error reports you posted above may be completely useless as they make me think there is something wrong with your Java install or something core to Windows is bugged up.

Just had a normal crash with a report when I logged in, chose a character:

As far as other issues with my computer, I have had a few BSODs, but when it is Salem there is no Blue Screen, its just locks up. Event viewer is no help, I can get the exact time of the crash from it but there are no reports from the system or applications prior to the crashes. I ran a memory diagnostic and that reported no errors.

In general, for the error you got, I found this support request on Stack Overflow. According to the answers, if you're running Java 7, you might try downgrading to Java 6 and see if things work, or try reinstalling Java, due to implementation changes between the versions. (Make sure to use a cleanup utility like ccleaner to remove any remains of Java from your system.). You can have both 6 and 7 installed on your machine, but it does take a bit more work when you update or try to set up new Java apps.

Otherwise, when is the last time you ran maintenance utilities--defrag and scanned for drive errors--and ran a virus check? These would be good things to look into. When you say you're getting BSOD errors with other programs, these can help and indicative that you have drive errors that are often fixable without a loss of data or a virus. (Feel free to post or shoot me a PM with one of those BSOD reports if you want. Sometimes they'll point at general hardware errors.) In some cases where these don't work or Windows is too corrupted to clean up, reinstalling may be the easiest solution, though not always the least time consuming (I'm counting for the time to reinstall updates and other software, too).

Salem's got a lot of memory leaks... happens to me occasionally; but my workstation has 16GB of RAM... I can handle most overflows.

Just get used to it or move on... don't hold your breath on fixes.

Two Cents.

Avoid: trees with falling leaves, windmills, Boston npc's... there are more... but those are the worst.

Been playing salem for longer than I have had this account, must be about two years now, if not longer. I have got used to it, doesn't mean I have to like it and can't try to fix it. But thanks for trying to help.

I shall try down grading to java 6 again, I think I tried that last year or even before that, and it didn't make any difference and, like you say, things get awkward with updates etc. Shall run some more system checks, see what I can come up with. Today I got KO'd because of a crash, annoyingly I was within tiles of some food but I fainted with fear. Its happened before, crashes as I agro deers and things, at least its not like Haven, all I lose is my inspiration.

Also, I can AFK without freezing for ages, standing right under a grand maple, it tends to be when I make something appear/cause loading that the crash happens, and my memory is never full, hell sometimes it happens when I have just booted and logged in, doesn't sound like a memory leak to me. I'm not denying that there are memory leaks, but I don't think they are causing my specific problem.

The things I avoid:
Going into houses (and coming back out again)
Going to boston
Strangely it hasn't happened when I go into our windmill, but it does happen at random other times too.
